Save for the Holidays with Online Surveys (and More!)

Hello readers, can you run marathons?

I just walked 5k to see if I could, and I’m dead. Since I’m short of time this week, I’m re-purposing posts from my money tag as ideas to make some money for the holidays. I also wanted to post it early so that should you sign up for a service, you can have more time to earn a little before December (as some panels take a while to process!).

Please note that I do not claim that any of these will replace your job! I consider surveys as putting a dent in costs not eliminate them. Some people may be able to make a living from other methods I mention, but I think that they really treat it like a full time job, so it’s not an additional income.

Surveys & Panels

There are a plethora of online survey sites, and it can be difficult to determine if one is trustworthy, effective, and worthwhile. I wouldn’t recommend something I haven’t tried, but it kind of seems like everyone has a horror story. It’s ultimately up to you! My dad actually does in real life survey groups he finds on Craigslist, but I wouldn’t go near Craigslist in a million years, lol.

All of these sites provide the option of paying “cash” that is, sending payment to a Paypal account. Gift cards are also a popular payment option (for some survey sites the only) which could be a useful present. Survey frequency may depend on one’s demographics (age, gender, income, etc) and may not be available for certain locations. For more info and groups, check out my 11 Survey Sites That Pay Cash post.

Apps

Did you know that there are apps that pay you to put ads on your smartphone lock screen? This is the method I know the least about. I’ve only tried one app for this, Slidejoy, and it seems to take me 6 months to get $10. 😕 I know that seems very long, but it’s incredibly passive. You don’t even have to watch ads. And hey, maybe you check your phone more than me and will earn more quicker!

Selling

Perhaps if you’re some kind of Wolf of Wall Street you could make some funds through Mary Kay or Herbalife type selling. But cleaning out your closet throughout the year or maybe selling crafts if you’re artistic can add up! I haven’t sold on Etsy, but I have on eBay, Amazon, Poshmark and Mercari. Poshmark is more fashion-focused, but IMO, it’s the easiest because the fees are minimal, flat rate shipping, and there’s a fresh marketplace.

Make money online

To find out a little bit more about these sites, my intro is here. In the future, I may write up about each specifically to elaborate about those fees, but I don’t really have plans for something like drop shopping. I may be experimenting with Amazon, so stay tuned!

Printables on Etsy look appealing because you don’t have to worry about shipping. And I suppose there’s always the classic baby/house/pet sitting. Should I have mentioned stuff like that? Uber? Even if you don’t earn that much before the holidays, these can continue to help chip away at those bills afterwards.

5 Outfits You Need for Fall

Howdy readers, everything okay?

I hope that you’re well even if with dangerous weather and political events having been trying. To be honest,  I can’t really tell anyone what to do, but if you write or tweet or Insta a rant, I will support you and retweet it!! I can also provide distraction from real life with things on which you can spend money. Here are some looks I’ve put together where I’ve tried to consider different climates and situations. Even if you don’t like a whole outfit, I hope you can still see how you can make it your own!

Brown leaves, Brown skirt

Skirt Outfit
Boohoo Boots $20 | Madewell Belt $35 | Nordstrom Rack Top $25
Revolve Hat $68 | Romwe Skirt $9

If you search for “fall outfits” on Pinterest, something similar to this is probably the first result. I like a (faux) suede skirt for fall, and bell sleeves complement an a-line nicely! Although any long-sleeved top can work. And thigh high boots with skirt bottoms are great for modesty or weather.

Casual Camel Cardigan

Fall Jeans Outfit
Old Navy Sweater $30 | H&M Shirt $6 | Walmart Flats $13
JCPenny Necklace $6 | H&M Jeans $16

Here’s your “I’ve a cold, but we’re out of Tylenol” look. Or any on-the-go day where you still want to be comfortable. What’s great about this outfit is that since it’s fall, and it may not be that cold or hot, or it may chill one day and then it’s back to summer, you can keep pieces from that seasons’s wardrobe and just toss something more autumnal over it.

Ready for Plaid & Pumpkins

Fall Look shorts
H&M Shorts $5 | Asos Tights $5 | 6PM Boots $19
Walmart Blazer $22 | Forever 21 Top $8

As said, the weather itself is transitioning, so why not make the most of your closet? If you can get away with shorts, tights and leggings are so fun especially with booties. Personally, I will never tire of sweaters, but a boyfriend blazer can make a look unique. I just chose this cheap one but there are some from Charlotte Russe in a similar range, but they were also plaid. What do you think of plaid on plaid?

Sweet & Spooky

Autumn Look Dress
Nordstrom Scarf $24 | Asos Dress $10 | Nicole Miller Shoe $41
Beauty Bakerie Lip $20 | Francesca’s Earrings $20

I would’ve loved to make some looks with more fanciful dresses, but this post ended up being about staples. I’m not sure if I like a heeled sandal with a scarf, but I like them individually 😅 If you don’t, the skirt of a skater dress mimics an a-line, so those thigh high boots are a cute option. Maybe you can get a velvet pair.

Must Have Mustard

Fall Look leggings
H&M Sweater $25 | Old Navy Tote $25 | Forever 21 Headband $7
Charlotte Russe Booties $25 | Nine West Leggings $20

Another cozy outfit. Shiny or faux leather leggings seem sexy in warmer weather, but can easily be transformed with a autumn colored sweatshirt and booties. Since this is an easy or quick look, you might be in a rush, so there’s no time to do your hair. Hence, a headband!

An outfit for every clothing type! I hope you find some inspo if you’re needing an ensemble, are tired of your closet, or are refreshing the wardrobe. Are you already wearing these looks? Jealous! I can’t wait to wear everything at once like a big leaves but with laundry.

Filipino-American History Month

Mabuhay readers, alam mo kung anong oras na?

October is Filipino-American History Month. While I would like to just share a few Filipino brands like my last post for Hispanic Heritage Month, since it is my… community, this would just not be the blog of me and my heated aries self if I did not Get Into It.

Sight

Invocation to Daughters

Maybe it would’ve been different if I’d grown up somewhere with a larger population, but the sights are of exploitation— WWII, lightening creams, submissive wives, travel brochures (the OG travel bloggers). Maybe not. I’ve had a draft for a while about my reaction to Invocation to Daughters by Barbara Jane Reyes. Right now it starts with how I never really had any Filipino friends much less any interested in politics or organizing. I don’t have path to follow or support to create one. Sure, light-skinned and mixed white celebs can grace the cover of Philippines magazine, but does that make me proud? Do all of these compliant party hosts that dance to not step on any toes help us?

Sound

When Janet Mock was on The Daily Show, Noah mentioned how a friend cried seeing the latest Wonder Woman film. I can’t relate to that, but I think of only finding Ruby Ibarra this year, how she’s the first angry Filipina I’ve seen. I cry when I see her “make it” onto television.

Smell

If I were some fucking weird (Fil-)Am that romanticizes brown poverty, I’d say some shit like, “My mother’s house was always brimming with lumpia for all of the neighborhood, lumpia, karaoke, simple, giving, simple (maybe some sort of accent joke)…” But my mom’s apartment smells like cat piss, and she turns down invites now because cooking is actually expensive, and her work is cutting not just hours but days. There are only so many hours in those, so I don’t really follow data that much, but statistically, I don’t think Fil-Ams are disenfranchised in the same way as other minorities. So it’s just seems real toothless to me when people don iconography when they could just tell their parents that Trump is a shithead, blackface is racist, and bakla people aren’t a joke. Not only do I gotta proactively sniff out those that get a whiff of “other” in the air, but now I gotta keep my guard up the other way about fellas flexing but are just as volatile as the other side when you point these things out.

Taste

cat mug

Obviously we should be able to live our lives without having to be advocates for them and those of our families, without having to spend every waking moment dedicated to educating and mobilizing against injustice. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying Pinoy performers on reality competitions or cutesy prints like from Gunita Designs. But there’s a taste on my tongue that tells me people think shouting pride the loudest can garner reward from even the most slightly famous. And no matter how much you looooovee sinigang, it’s a bitter flavor.

Feel

Hopefully I don’t come off as a certain Fil-Am Fox News anchor (or whatever she is). While I think there should be more critical thought about “pride,” I truly despise mixed white, 1st gen, or anyone else approximate to privilege using it punch down. I’d elaborate, but let’s just say such limits can be alienating. That’s why no matter how much oldies complain or how stressful social media can be, I’m honestly thankful for the Internet because it’s allowed me to see Fil-Am organizations like Anakbayan-USA, Bayan USA, and Gabriela USA, their work and ideas. I can see Arkipelago Books offer more than just travel books!!! And even if I can’t afford them all, I can use this system my library has where I can borrow books from other states. I may feel isolated, but I don’t feel alone.

I don’t know what one would call this. It’s not exactly a poem. IDK where the senses came from, but senses make up one’s perception which fit kind of nicely, no? It’s not exactly a celebration of Fil-Am history in general, but I’m part of history… And I managed to seek in a bunch of plugs for other people. So I am truly unstoppable, lmao. Can someone please tell my parents that? May we all buy a bunch from Arkipelago and dance at all the protests.

September 2018

Hello readers, how’s it going?

September just flew by, didn’t it? I didn’t even realize it was time for this post… last week. I blame the weather. Even though I’m not breaking out my sweaters yet, I’m still very excited for October! But before this month’s celebrations, here’s the highlights from September!

I went to yoga with my mom because she’s always complaining about being stiff. She liked it, but just being around people makes me anxious. I’d much rather just sit by the pool while I still can 😅🌞 What should I do? Was your September quick too, or are you ready for pumpkin season?
