Happy Birthday to Me!

Since one of my best pals had her first baby– plus general adulting– it can be tough to get away for some girl time. So it was decided that we should at least have a lunch every month. I got to choose the venue this weekend since it’s my birthday month. And while the girls love a certain chain restaurant, I need variety.

I chose Taqueria Emanuel since it’s pretty close to where we usually eat, and because I’ve been dying to try this infamous horchata. Also because Wikipedia compares Filipino longaniza to chorizo, and I wanted to judge for myself.

Taqueria Emanuel is a small place with just a front room for a few tables, but the food and service is great, so what more do you need? I got papa con chorizo, my friends got tostadas and campechanos, and we ordered enough to share with each other.

Campechanos has pico de gallo which I guess makes it spicy if you’re not used to it! The menu said the papa con chorizo was also supposed to be spicy, but I feel like I tasted more of the potatoes. I loved the tostadas and was honestly a little sad I was too full to finish mine!

If you’re in the Tampa area, I definitely recommend them. I’m ready to try the sopes and taco Hawaiiano. Be sure to look for them on any of those foodie services like Groupon or their website for discounts!

During our outing, we were able to exchange birthday presents as well, so here’s a look at what I got.

In addition to these very cute, pink candle, masks and clipboard, I was also given a (pink) lip balm, ceramic travel mug, and another floral scented candle. 😊

I’m so glad we got to try something new and that my friends were pleased too! What kind of food should I try next, Ethiopian or Lebanese?

Girlfriend Experience & Office Wear

I just finished watching the Starz series The Girlfriend Experience which seems loosely based on the 2009 film of the same name. I saw the movie a while ago and don’t remember it exactly, but the tv program was much more of ride.

It was probably not the show’s intention to make one want to emulate Riley Keough’s Christine Reade, but it was impossible for me not to notice Christine’s wardrobe. As a law student interning at a firm and becoming an escort, her style is very minimalistic yet commanding. I’ve become obsessed with this kind of look that could be worn at the office, but looks just as amazing for cocktails.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any pencil skirts or even know if I can pull them off, but I’m certainly now inspired to try.

What I just happen to have in my closet isn’t as fitted as what Christine has, but I don’t know if I would be as comfortable! It’s also probably more affordable. Everything was probably under $20 except for the bag which was from a site called Twice which was like a name brand version of ThredUp. They used to let you trade gift cards for credit. I miss that site.

Do you get to use a lot of office wear? Do you like the simple staples or are they too boring?

Mary Clare’s Questions:
1. Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel?
Yes? Aren’t you supposed to? 😛
2. Is there a profession you picture your future spouse doing?
Oh, boy. Perhaps in Fantasy Land, they are a journalist or comedian hahaha.
3. What is your biggest pet peeve?
hatE, hate, hate, hate when people can’t see past their own nose. Like: when people honestly don’t care until it happens to them or someone they know personally. People who say, “Well, I did this, why can’t everyone else?” Gee, maybe ‘cos you’re not the entire world?!?
4. Do you ever dance even if there’s no music playing?
Absolutely!
5. Is it okay for guys to wear pink?
They should rock it more, TBH.
6. Do you still watch cartoons?
I watch a lot of cartoons made for adults like The SimpsonsBob’s Burgers, and King of the Hill…  I could still go for more kiddish cartoons if I had the time or something. But then only like, old Pokemon or Sailor Moon!
7. Where would you bury hidden treasure if you had some?
Is my own yard too obvious? I’m sure nice hideaways would be cool, but if it’s treasure… wouldn’t you want it close?
jesse eisenberg
8. What movies could you watch over and over and still love?
I’ve wrote about The Social Network and how I love finding details I didn’t previously notice. I’m sure Fincher’s Gone Girl is just as interesting to rewatch.
9. When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper?
If it wasn’t to my brother in the last couple of years, then it’s probably been well over 10 years!
10. When you were a kid, what did you dress up as for Halloween?
I dressed up as a lot of things! A witch, an angel, some kind of 1950s person with a poodle skirt lol…
11. Have you ever cried because you were so happy?
I’ve probably cried from laughing…. 😅
